MOBI-KIDS New Zealand: risk factors for brain cancer in children and adolescents

MOBI-KIDS is a multinational case-control study of incident brain tumours in children and adolescents (age 10-24). Overall, 15 countries are involved, including Australia, Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Spain, Taiwan, The Netherlands and  New Zealand. The study will include 2,200 cases and 4,400 controls, and be by far the largest study ever conducted on this issue.  New Zealand’s participation will involve the recruitment of New Zealanders diagnosed with brain cancer at age 10-24 over a 2 ½ year period as well as 2 controls for each case (63 cases, 126 controls). Cases, controls and their caregivers will be interviewed using a questionnaire on mobile phone use and a range of other environmental risk factors. Self-reported mobile phone use will be validated using operator data and exposure to RF-EMF from mobile phones and other sources will be quantified to enable dose-response analyses.



(i) To elucidate the association between mobile phone use and the risk of brain cancer in children and adolescents (age 10-24)

(ii) to study other environmental risk factors for brain cancer in this age group (e.g. occupational exposures, medication use etc.).
